Connect sound to amplifier using tv's HDMI (ARC) cable

So I recently got a Sony Bravia (model XBR-65X850D) that I mounted in the wall. On the other side, I run an HDMI cable from where the TV is located to a media closet, where I have a Sonos Connect, and an amplifier that is connected to a few in-ceiling speakers around the house. These amplifier only has AV input (red and white).

My goal is to be able to connect the sound of the TV to my in-ceiling speakers. I tried the following:

Step 1) Output sound from the HDMI 4 / ARC of my TV through an HDMI cable.
Step 2) Input the HDMI cable (located in the media closet) into an HDMI to AV converter (got the Coween to HDMI2AV on Amazon).
Step 3) Output AV cables (red and white) from HDMI to AV converter and input them directly into the amplifier (red and white).

It did not work though. Is there a problem with the ARC signal?

If this can't work I thought about these 2 alternatives:

1) Using an Optical to HDMI adapter (example here) to output the optical from the TV and convert it into HDMI. I would have to do the same after and use the HDMI to AV converter before inputing into the amplifier.

2) Use some type of bluetooth transmitter and receiver, one connected to the TV (ARC or optical) and the other one to the amplifier. This is an example of this.

Can somebody tell me if I am doing something wrong and what would be the best solution for this.

ARC only works if the device you are hooking up your TV to, ALSO understands ARC.

I like optical to RCA (analog) converter. Configure TV to output to external, PCM mode. You will get stereo only.

You need an HDMI audio extractor like this one

That is more convenient than using a DAC to convert the optical out of the TV to analog that can be input to the Sonos Connect. You avoid having to use a long optical cable and use the HDMI cable that is already there (that's why ARC was invented).

HDMI Audio extractors will only convert HDMI ARC to spdif (optical) and not RCA L/R cables. I have the exact same situation with a new HDTV with only HDMI ARC as an available output, and an old receiver connected to ceiling speakers with only RCA inputs. I've also tried using (Tendak) HDMI Converters and it will convert from HDMI ARC to optical, but not HDMI ARC to RCA. It will take another HDMI input like a roku, for example and put out optical and RCA simultaneously, but if the device uses HDMI ARC, you cannot get sound out of the RCA output and into a receiver. I am still looking for a solution...

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, and i can confirm what you tried as it didn't work for me, and i just realized the converter box will only output to RCA if NOT connected via HDMI ARC. If connected via HDMI ARC only the Optical output on the converter box will work, but that doesn't help me, because my receiver is RCA input only, like yours.

on #2, i'd be worried about some sort of lag with multiple bluetooth transmitters working together.

Did you try option 1? Using optical to HDMI adapter to output optical from tv to HDMI, then use that as (a non ARC HDMI input) in the converter box to get out RCA from converter to amp seems like it makes sense.
