connected hdmi cable to tv and pc

Hi, i recently just brought a hdmi cable and tried putting it in the hdmi input of my tv and hdmi input or output of my pc but all i get is the computer screen but I don't see any pc icons what am i doing wrong or did I buy the wrong cable?

You get the computer screen but not the icons?

Do you normally get the icons on your computer?

This is happening because you are extending your pc's display to your tv. Right click your desktop and click the screen resolution tab. Then, where it say's extend this display, change that to duplicate or show only on your hdtv.

Or hold the windows key and press p.

It thinks you're trying to have different stuff in the two screens.
