Connecting Laptop (HDMI) to TV (VGA)

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion Notebook and I'd like to connect it to my (older) TV screen, but nothing I try seems to work. I've bought an HDMI to VGA cable, and I've tried selecting f4 ('project') whilst it's plugged in and the TV is on the correct input, but it keeps reading 'No Signal'.

I was able to connect my old laptop to the TV no problem (though that was VGA to VGA).

Can anyone help me?

Which exact cable did you buy becuase what you need is an "Active" hdmi to vga adapter.
The passive ones are for something different.

Oh! I didn't know about that. I bought this cable from amazon, though I'm afraid I don't know whether it's active or passive. From the price, I'm guessing passive?

That cable is to convert an old vga pc to a new tv's hdmi. It apparently doesnt work in reverse.

They usually look like This One though you can find cheaper variants with good reviews as well.
