I had a WD LIVE box which has now stopped working, getting "no signal" when connecting to TV with HDMI.

So not wanting to shell out for another yet, I decided to get a long HDMI and plug it in the back of the PC and plug it into the TV so I can watch downloaded movies on the TV still. Plays fine but there's no sound coming from the TV, the sound is coming from the PC speakers. Do I need to switch something up or do I need another cable of some sorts?

Solution

Yeah - This.

If there are speakers attached to your system I don't think they will default to using a display devices speakers because they assume you are using it as a typical PC. Go check to see what device your PC is using for playback.

Also - Don't give up on your Live Box. Hook it up using a different HDMI cable and see if you get anything. It could easily be something small.

When I right click the speakers are ticked, underneath there's two instances saying "digital audio s/pdif" would they be the TV?

I've tried three HDMI with the wd TV box, none of them work but they work with other stuff (TiVo/Xbox etc), but the TV recognises it's there because when I go to "input" on the remote to switch to the wd live box it's there, i.e not greyed out...if I unplug the HDMI it's greyed out, but when I choose the wd live source I get a black screen with a box in the corner saying "connecting" and then that switches to "no signal", so no idea what's up with it!
