Constant crackling sound in speakers

Hi everyone. I recently purchased some speakers from Amazon (Arion Legacy 2.1 system, to be exact) and the second I plugged the speakers into the subwoofer (via RCA connectors), they began making a loud crackling sound. No matter what combination of things were plugged in, there was always that crackling sound. Maybe it's a power issue, maybe it's a dirty connector. I was able to get a refund through amazon, but they wouldn't let me send it back because the package contained "hazardous materials". Now I have broken speakers lying around, but I'm hoping there's a chance they can be fixed. Does anyone know how I could go about doing that, or would it be best to just either throw them away or take it to someone else?

From your description it sounds like the amp inside the subwoofer module is bad. At his price point repair would be too expensive to pay someone to do.
The speakers could be used with other electronics.
By the way if there are hazardous materials in the box how did they send it to you in the first place? I think they got a bad batch of these, have already been reimbursed by their source, and see no reason to pay for shipping or disposal of the defective electronics.

So you're saying I should use a different subwoofer, but that there's really no point trying to repair it? Darn, that's too bad. I'll probably just get a new system.

And yes, it is very that they were able to ship it to me in the first place. My first thought was that the materials they were referring to was the flammable particle board used on the back of the subwoofer. Maybe they take certain precautions when shipping that they can't guarantee their customers will also take? I don't know. Your idea sounds the most likely.
