Converting Streaming Video?

OK, I downloaded this video and it’s “Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2” @ 524Kbps.

The only thing that sux is I cant fast forward (or rewind) I assume because it’s streaming.

Is there a player that will let me skip around or maybe I can convert it?

Thx in advanced & Cya

Hard to tell exactly what is wrong from your post. Go to http://www.doom9.org and get a copy of Nandub. Doom9 has guides to help you figure out the program. You might try doing a direct stream copy first. Sometimes Nandub will fix minor problems by just resaving with dsc in about 2 minutes. If that dont work you may need to go full process mode and convert to another format. That will take a good fraction as long as the video runs. If it is just a clip it will not take long but a whole movie might take a few hours depending on your system.

Nandub error?

Damn, It’s says that format is not supported?

Microsoft owns the patent (#6,041,345) on the ASF format, preventing 3rd party apps form extraction data form ASF files. ASF file format support was removed as of V1.3d at the request of MS to avoid patent infringements claims. Virtual Dub no longer supports ASF. Please do not ask for versions that do.

Anyone got an older version they would be willing to send me?

AHhhhha ASF, i got something to try but it is on my 3rd computer which is not hooked up any more. I'll hafta get back to you. I'm sure I have an old copy of VD but what I'm looking for is an asf specific program that will make your stream random acessable instead of sequential. see you in a bit.

Dude You need Asf Tools 2.3, get it at http://www.geocities.com/myasftools

Add the asf file, go to Advanced, select "Make Seekable".

I also found vd/asf but for what you are doing asf tools is better.

Thx!!! That program worked like a charm!

1st I had to rename the file to *.asf (vs mpg) then I just hit repair. Now I can fast forward and rewind till my hearts desire.

I’m a total newbie when it comes to video stuff so thx again.

BTW I just left it as an ASF file, Would it be better to convert it to another type? (Like DivX) Would it make it smaller or have better quality?

Thx again

Anytime you convert from one format to another you take the chance of loseing quality. Even if you went to a format that has the potential for better quality a copy can never be better then the original. You might be able to save space but you will loose quality in the process.

Personally I hate ASF just because of the M$ Nazi software police and for purely political reasons I would change it but that is my problem not yours. If the ASF is working the way you want it to, leave it alone.
