If I buy a D-Link 655n will this increase my I/O speed over that of the W54G

Depends. If you are looking at poor signal then you may want something that has a better setup. I'm running a DG834N at the moment, and the wireless signal stomped on the airport next door are using. However speed-wise you'll not get any better if you don't have MIMO equipment all over your network.
