Data and voice at the same time?

I would very much like to get email on my phone like device. This
will, of course, require the phone like device to be talking data at
reasonable intervals. On my current phone (LG4400) a data call ties
up the phone. Is this true on all the PDA devices? If they are
connected for data can you still get a phone call? The GSM phones
seem to be able to do both at once but I'm not sure about the CDMA
phones, including the blackberry. I would love to know if users of
verizon & GSM blackberry/i600/i700/Treo600 have lost calls while the
PDA was doing data.

GPRS with GSM can be *paused* but AFAIK you cannot do both
simultaneously.

CDMA on the other hand cannot do both voice and data at the same time
or "paused."

Regular GPRS is slower than the CDMA high speed but IIRC EDGE on GSM
is about the same or higher speed than 1XEVDO on CDMA.

Depends on the device, but AFAIK there are no such devices on the market.

GPRS at 40-50 Kbps is about as fast as CDMA 1X at 40-60 Kbps.
Both are widely deployed.

UMTS at 220-320 kbps is somewhat slower than CDMA EV-DO at 300-500 Kbps.
Both have very limited deployment.

EDGE at 120-150 Kbps is in the middle, and is fairly widely deployed.

(Note that these are typical speeds, not burst speeds.)

Hmmmm, SOunds like a lot of missed calls on CDMA. Do you know if it
gives you a "call waiting"?
