Defective or not

I just got a new pair of M-Audio AV-30 monitors and I noticed that the first thing is that when I turn the volume up or down the right speaker makes a lot of static sounds and I tried to move the volume up and down many many times and now I don't really hear much static sound but because it first had the static sound does that mean I will have problems in the future meaning is this a defective item? Also when I say other problem I thought that if one thing isn't working right then there are other parts that will have problems in the future I just assume that though.

Probably not, just maybe a little dirt on the contacts of the volume knob.
