Hi

Does anybody know which 1Gb SODIMM memory modules that will work on this c640 laptop. I know that "officially" it can only take 512 Mb but I also know that many people has got it to work with 1Gb modules.
So can anyone give examples of which modules that will work / not work....Thanx !!

the problem is that all crucial, kingston memory configurators uses the "official" 512 Mb only as option.
one of my memory slots is broken so I have to use the other one, which means that I need a 1Gb memory module to upgrade from the 512 Mb I have now.

I have this exact Laptop and It holds a maximum of 1GB of memory. It has 2 memory banks. So the largest single sodimm you can put in it is 512mb. If one of your memory banks is broken then the max memory you can install is 512mb. Sorry.

This is straight from the User's guide for the C540/C640
Memory

Memory module connector
two user-accessible SODIMM sockets

Memory module capacities
128, 256, and 512 MB

Memory type
266-MHz DDR SDRAM

Standard memory
128 MB

Maximum memory
1 GB

Have you actually tried to put a 1gb module in? I have the same problem as mrjack10 and would like to find a 1gb module that works.

Memory is cheap so it's worth to try.
I had one C640 long-long time ago and it worked with 1GB DDR SO-DIMM modules just fine.

This may be somewhat late but the largest memory I have installed in our C640's is 1GB x 2. These are DDR400 SODIMMs from AData and also Corsair.

I have run into one C640 that intermittantly sees the second slot but that is a defective motherboard.

I also have a Dell 640 and when I looked it up, the max was 1GB. At the time, it had only 512MB (256 x 2). I called 1-800-4-MEMORY (a RAM distributor), and they told me the same, so that's what I bought for it. Even if the chips would fit into the slots, the motherboard may not accept them and could cause hardware damage. That's what the distributor told me. He's there to make money, so it would've been to his advantage to sell me more. Too, they offer a lifetime warranty, but only if you're staying within the specs. I upgraded to 1GB (512 x 2) and am happy with it. It's a vintage laptop, built to run Win 2K Pro, not Windows 7 Ultimate.

I just bought for my c640 a nobrand 1gb module from Ebay, since I had read positive experiences with people installing it here in this thread. The spec is:
1GB DDR PC2700 SODIMM 1 GB PC 2700 333MHz

This one to be more exact:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110476482025

I only had 2x256 before, so now I have 1280. It worked without any trouble. I put it in ram slot 1. I'm quite sure it will work with 2x1gb too, but I didn't need more for now, as it's just an "assisting" laptop running XP.

Hi,

it seems like lot of people either haven't actually read the question, or feel very strongly that they have to respond, even though having no clue - and are just mentoring you with the official specs (which is of course NOT what you're asking about). So much noise!
Anyway - I have a whole bunch of old "C" Latitudes and in the C640 I've had for at least 2 years a 1GB module with absolutely no Memory problem whatsoever)
1GB module ("Micron" MT16VDDF12864hg-335D2 PC2700S - 1GB, DDR, 333, CL2.5) is in the slot 1, Slot 2 has a PC2100 256MB - "Nanya" module and comp has seen (even in the BIOS) 1.25 GB from the get-go.
That's all

I have had the 2 gig upgrade running perfectly for years on my c640. I don't have the brand/model of memory at hand, but I remember it had to be low-density chips...
