Dell notebook microphone problems free

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. I retired and live in the Caribbean. I have given it to our neighbor's daughter for her studies. She wants to use for Skype too, but the mic does not work. I have tried everything I can think of, including an external mic, to no avail.

Have you enabled the mic in windows sound properties?
