dell vostro 1014 black screen

my dell vostro 1014 screen goes black.when I connect it to external monitor then I found my laptop working fine.what should be the problem

you need to use Fn + F8 to choose how you want your display to show on external screen. you can choose just to show on laptop, just to show on external monitor or to show on both.

in windows 7, you can also use 'Windows Key'+P
to easily access the external monitor settings. This should give you the options your looking for.
