Denon avr 1500 remote does not control volume

after a number of years off, i have decided that i like my denon avc 1500, instead a cheaper, all be it newer, Panasonic home theater system. IMNSHO, the avc 1500 sound just fine. The denon remote does all the things i need, but it does not change the volume on the receiver...... anyone have any ideas ??
