I tried to add and external monitor (smart tv) using a 15 pin to HDMI cable. The two devices would not talk to each other and the display on the laptop is gone.
Is there a button I may have pushed accidentally?

I hope you bought the right thing because 15 pin vga is an anolog signal and hdmi is a digital, you need an active adapter and not just a cable.

Can you post a link to what you bought?
