Digital Signal Pixilating in HD

Greetings all,
In my area of Central California all the major networks are broadcasting in
Digital.

ABC
CBS
NBC

Now on NBC I watch "The Tonight Show", which is broadcast in HiDef, and the
picture looks GREAT! The signal strength is in the "GOOD" 75% range.

But on CBS (NYPD Blue) and ABC (CSI), the signal is only in the "FAIR" range
around 50% on the meter. Now this signal seems to work great for normal
programming, but when HiDef kicks in, I am getting video/audio drop outs
that render the programs un-watchable. Almost as if the signal cannot
accommodate the increased data rate/bandwidth of HD.

The Chief Engineers at the respective stations claim they have filed with
the FCC for the right to broadcast at a high power, but approval is pending.
One of them also claims that my antenna (four bay bowtie antenna) is for
UHF, and I would have better luck with a VHF antenna.

Has anyone had similar problems? Did the Antenna fix it? What type of
antenna is everyone having good luck with?

I stayed in the Fresno area for several weeks in the early 90's
and remember at that time all of the major TV stations were on UHF. I
just looked up the channels your local stations are using for digital
transmittion. (This may not be the same channel that your set top box
automatically dispays which often times is the "traditional" analog
number). Your CBS digital channel is 34 and NBC is on 16 and PBS is on
40 all UHF and the four bay bow tie should handle these well. However
your ABC station is using channel 9 and UPN is using channel 7 for
digital broadcast. For these VHF stations you may indeed find a small
VHF antenna to give better results. There are few VHF only antennas
available at the usual retail markets nowdays, so you may want a
combination UHF/VHF antenna.
It would be a good idea to check your connections, cables, etc.
If it has been up for a long time corrosion and wind can take a toll.

Boy are you talking to some dumb,lying engineers.

Somebody else has already pointed out they apparently don't know UHF from
VHF. Here's another. They don't have to "file" for permission to broadcast
at full power. Just the opposite! They have to have permission to run at
LESS than full authorized power.

I use a 4 bay UHF bow tie for OTA HD TV... Works swell at 11 mile
tower range.

UHF channels are 14 thru 59.

VHF channels are 2 thru 13.... where a 4 bay bow tie may not perform
well.
