DIgital Storm - Javelin, decent value for money?

Hey guys,

I need to get a new gaming laptop and Ive gone through a lot of threads that say the main gaming laptop companies (eg alienware) have horrible value for money. I found this laptop from Digital Storm which sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Wanted to ask your opinion on it:

$1,365 (£823.38, im based in London)
Specs:
- NVIDIA GTX 860M 2GB
- Intel Core i7 4810MQ CPU
- 8GB 1600MHz Memory
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- 750GB 7200RPM Storage HDD
- DVD/CD Multi-Drive
- Wireless-N
- Microsoft Windows 8.1
- 15 inch (15.6") Display
- 1920 x 1080 Display
*this is the one of the standard builds, its also customisable, but thats beside the point

I tried to see the price that would come up if I built my own desktop with similar components and the price exceeded £1000, and as far as im aware its cheaper to set up desktops. This also blows any competitors out of the water spec-wise in that price range.

Any thoughts? Is it worth it?

If I am not mistaken, the Javelin is a rebranded Sager 7358. You can look up info on that model for an idea.

I believe they are essentially the same. Not much info on that either unfortunately. Price is almost the same, less than $100 difference in favor of Sager assuming i got all the components matched

yeah that idea that you can order it here for free is completely wrong, sorry buddy! you have to pay shipping cost - which is normally around $100-200 depending on who you use, as well as VAT for britain, so that's going to bump it up by another 20% - by the end of its practically cheaper to buy something from a british reseller.
the cheapest UK laptops can be found at pcspecialist.co.uk - i've been searching for the best retailer for months so trust me I know. for similar specs to the digital storm version you wanted you're going to have to spend around £900 for the Vortex IV LE. Or on the 8th of April, new specs and configurations will be available - so you can get an 860M and an I7 for around 820-850 hopefully on the optimus V range. hope this helps.

I completely forgot about that I have checked out pcspecialist before and they seem to have some pretty decent stuff but threads on this website said that its a bit of a rip off, so i started looking for other stuff. do you have one of their laptops? if so please pm me id be interested to know how it runs

The trouble with taking feedback from forums is that often the only people who come back to open a topic are the people with a big problem with it or those dedicated reviewers. I would check external reviews like notebook check or engagadget or something - notebook check especially do good reviews.

Again people consider it a rip off since they see the price for a similar product in the USA, convert the currency and say "dafuq is this, I could have had this for so much cheaper, herp" but USA doesn't pay as much if any tax on electrical goods compared to most of the EU inc. the UK - that's why our prices are so much higher.
it's really depressing but we're stuck with higher prices since we pay VAT / import duties / whatever it is that's 20%.

so again sadly pcspecialist is the cheapest UK dealer, if you feel build quality might be an issue, then may be try www.mysn.co.uk - they use all the same chassis and parts but if you follow the stereotype that German's make better quality stuff then there you go. Oh and the new graphics cards have been reviewed on notebookcheck with mysn A.K.A XMG / Schwenker laptops - so they have the new cards.
The only other way to get a decent laptop a bit cheaper is to wait for certain products to go on special offer at online retailers. Here's the main ones I know - ebuyer, scan. CCL, ariapc. laptopsdirect

Edit: I'm off to uni in 3 months time so i've been studying the market for 6 months trying to find the ideal laptop and where to get it. I don't currently own one but I know the market quite well - or atleast I'd like to think so, every now and again I get a little surprise.
