DirectTiVo - channels I receive

why do I need to set this up manually? What is stopping the TiVo from
figuring it out - after all the box knows what channels to let me watch - I
assume that I receive them all from the satellite.

It wouldn't be so bad, if the TiVo didn't forget my list every few months!

Do you subscribe to *ALL* pay channels on DTV? How much does that cost?
Sometimes the pay channels show an unscrambled promo - just because
you get that doesn't mean you can get everything on the channel.

No, I don't think you receive EVERYONE's local channels.

It is sometimes convenient to take things out of Channels I Receive,
such as <Insert language I don't understand>-channels, over-the-air
weak channels that are unwatchable, satellite channels where you are
just on the edge of the spot beam and can't get it reliably,

No one's suggesting the box could do a perfect job of figuring out what
channels you get. No one's also suggesting that it couldn't still let
you manually edit the list to get rid of cruft you don't care about.

There is, however, no real reason it can't at least make a good guess at
the channels you receive. Other DirecTV receivers can manage this, and
it's a very nice time saver.

Making this matter worse is the channels you receive UI. It only shows
the channel ID and number, doesn't give you any more clues about the
channel or what it shows. Some of this may be fixed in the recent
versions, I wouldn't know, but having to resort to a pen-n-paper to fill
out that list seemed a bit silly to me.

You haven't looked "there" recently.

Channel descriptions began improving about the time the Mix channels
were added. Nothing has been done for local channels but most people
know those very well.

A few examples...
102 NMX News Mix Channel
201 DTV Customer Service Channel
208 ECL ESPN Classic Sports
250 REAL FOX Reality
261 LRW Lifetime Real Women
264 BBCA BBCA
265 A&E A&E
294 KIDS Discovery Kids
340 PLUS Direct Shop Network
376 NASA NASA-TV
523 SBLK Starz In Black

All words in the above examples are in the Channels You Receive list.
The regional sports channels have good abbreviations.
Does anyone not know what BBCA and A&E represent?

BTW, channels 250 and 261 were added in the last couple of weeks.

Nevermind. I just saw the "not" in the above line meaning you know and
expect everyone else to know what they mean.
