Disk error acer laptop

Hello,
Hello,my laptop has suddenly decided to give me a lovely error message of "A disc read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart...no problem, but guess what it just keeps on repeating the message! I cannot get pass the 'black' what I know as the 'dos screen. Can anyone throw any light on this infuriating problem? thanks folks

Really unfortunate you got the "disc read error" message.
I suggest using this Disk Management Tool Parted Magic. This runs from CD (no install is required). You can test your HDD and try to save your data.
