I am thinking of getting a dlp or hd ila television. I have to admit I have
fallen in love with the JVC hd ila sets. In any case I have direct tv. I
can find no place that will show me a picture from Direct tv not in High
definition. I am trying to see what it looks like. Does anyone know of a
place or has anyone any experiance with direct tv on DLP or hd ila not in
high definition ?

Try Tweeter, they have DTV here in San Diego, don't know if they're in your
area. They have them here in san Diego, and they are elsewhere in the U.S.
under different names Try www.tweeter.com and they may have their affiliates
listed on their website. And if not, call a store. Goodluck

I have a JVC D-ILA and Directv. The SD picture from Directv on this set is
okay. Any time you increase the size of a picture (I went from a 36" direct
view to the 52" D-ILA) without increasing the resolution the picture quality
is going to suffer IMO. Also, you have to consider the source. Some SD
pictures on Directv are better than others and I believe this is due to the
original quality of the source. I have no problem personally with the SD
quality on this set.

You didn't ask, but I play DVD's using a progressive scan player with
component outputs and the picture quality is great.

The HD quality is very good but dependent on the compression ration that
Directv is using and, again, the quality of the original programming. Some
movies for example really stand out in HD but others do not. Discovery HD
and HDNet are two of the best in terms of program quality.

The very best HD quality is that which you get OTA. If you can pick up your
local broadcast channels in HD they are outstanding usually.

Finally, Directv has launched 2 or 3 new satellites and plan to increase its
HD programming capacity over the next couple of years. No one knows
exactly what form this will take but Directv has said that they will use the
satellites to broadcast local channels in HD starting with the largest
demographics and working out to the smaller ones. There are many statements
also about increasing national channels (ESPN2, Cinemax, TNT, etc.) but
these statements have been rather ambiguous and no one really know what
channels will be added or when.

I think it's pretty safe to say that, in order to stay competitive with
cable, Directv will be adding local HD programming as well as national HD
over the next 2 years.
