do new, unused batteries wear down even if you don't use them?

hello. i imported a new battery from ebay for my asus k450jn(laptop) because i thought that my battery is dying. but i was wrong.

if i keep the new unused battery for long enough(without using it), will it reduce its capacity? or it will still remain the same as a new one?

It should be fine for a very long time, as the main cause of wear on a battery is the power running through it.

All batteries lose their charge if stored for a long time, but are OK when you recharge them

The life of a battery is measured in how many times you can use it then recharge it before it wears out.

If you always use your laptop with it plugged into the mains, the battery can be continually charging, which uses up its life

As has been said, batteries "self-discharge" over time if left alone. Generally, letting batteries completely discharge is not good for them.

Always keep your battery charged but never let it fall below 10 percent or totally discharge, as the charge depletes below 0-10 percent it puts a strain on the battery to try to recharge this can cause the battery to get very warm to hot. Most batteries have three terminal points positive negative and an additional terminal know as thermistor terminal to monitor the temperature of the battery and cut out the charging process. So you find that if the battery is struggling to charge and getting hot it will shut off that is why I would advise to keep all batteries charge up and do not let them fall to low and struggle to charge, It is H&S measure to prevent fires or exploding batteries.

Rechargeable batteries do lose charge over time in storage, and if you plan on leaving it unused for more than a month then 70% capacity ir recommended for a storage charge, and much longer than (I would say) 3 months you should be monitoring the battery to ensure it does not go below unsafe levels(windows has a built in setting under power options (probably based on voltage) where you can see what percent it will shut down at under advanced power options, but 10% should be min if it stats under for storage.
