I might switch to Avira(or similar free antivirus, still don't like bitdefender) because Avast is a resource hog and screws with my PC booting up. Gets me a black screen for about a minute or two... Removing it from start up works, but resources used by avast are pretty high, and I need as much as I can get with the things I do(Virtual Machines galore) and 4 gigs of RAM

I don't use any antivirus because I use Linux, and Linux is natively secure, and doesn't really need one.

But before I chose to use Linux, I was on Win7, and I used AVG Free in conjunction with spybot search and destroy. However, I cannot vouch for them as they let in two viruses before. The first one prevented AVG and spybot from running, and requested that I buy their (probably fake) antivirus. Had to do a clean install to get rid of it. The second was a boot sector virus. I no longer had my copy of win7, so I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot for a while, took some files I couldn't replace from my windows partition, then deleted windows. And I wasn't doing anything "shady" on there. If you run windows, you need several layers of antivirus protection just to keep it running, which is the main reason I will never go back to windows.

I have been using avg free antivirus for years and it has never let any virus get into my computers. any virus that I ever had was one I caught when I opened an attachment to something and even a paid antivirus would not have caught. sometimes and for the most that is how a virus gets into your computer by something that was opened by the user. it is something that just happens.

i to am a Linux user just because i think it is better than windows and as said earlier no antivirus is needed just a firewall. but keep in mind no such thing as being bullet proof. just my thoughts and thanks for the space.

I'd use antivirus on Linux personally because of all of the random websites and commands I would run through Terminal. If I need Linux, I always have 2 Live USB's on me and I have 10 Linux Virtual machines set up + 2 windows ones... I *heart* Linux

I like Linux but don't like the virtual mode. it is ok for trying the different distros. never tried or felt the need to have to use antivirus on Linux.

Ummm.... Linux also has its own problems with viruses/etc.. Just saying.

Now, as far as Windows is concerned, your statement is entirely false. As far as having a truly 100% clean computer, no amount of AV/firewall/security tools will keep your PC clean. Most typical users will have problems, regardless of their AV software; and many may never know it. The typical computer I get my hands on to fix is usually one that has severe slow downs, but no real obvious signs of infection to the "typical user." For me, it's blatantly obvious what's going on; but for the people who give me their computers, they just want their computer to run faster because "It's old, and there's just too much crap on it."

Not to mention, AV software, AM software (malware), and software firewalls, can only do so much. Even with heuristics enabled, the likelihood of an infection from a random source, minor carelessness, and a little bit of bad luck, is higher than many would expect. I'm willing to bet that almost every computer has an infection of some sort (mine included), if you were to do proper forensics. Having a single AV software installed is going to help you sleep at night, but it's just a patch to prevent major problems that most of your "typical users" will encounter. Realistically, it's nothing more than that.

some of the computers that I have cleaned up have gotten a lot of crap installed by coupon shopping sites that people seem to visit a lot.
also a lot of the game sites seem to have all sorts of crap that fills up your hard drive.

TROVI hijacker is a mean one and so far the only solution for it is to do a full recovery or a new install.

that is just some of the crap I have run into on peoples computers.

Malwarebytes is good and Norton power eraser does wonders if things aren't to bad.
just some thoughts

Yeah, that coupon adware bs always annoys the hell out of me. In fact, the POS at my second job actually has some of that junk installed on it. If I was in town more often, I'd offer my boss to clean it up for him... but that would mean a computer would be out of commission for a couple days, and he doesn't have a backup machine. Even worse, he only uses MSE, and nothing else for protection. He's just too cheap.

And yeah, come to think of it, the main junk I see on most computers is typically from game and coupon websites. I just don't see why people think these websites are a good idea. I guess the economy is that bad? IDK...

Skylyne I think the reason why is the fact that most people don't "THINK" and that is why they go to those crap filled sites. some computers I have gotten back days later with the same crap from the same sites filled back up again. "SUCKERS" job security for me at my part time job. should be able to write off paid antivirus for a business. I write my work computer off as a work expense, not all of it but a percentage as also my tools and whatever else I can etc.

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit is good to have if you don't want to configure EMET at all. If you already have EMET it's worth trying out, but the two applications do conflict sometimes. (for example, MBAE often breaks the SimExecFlow protection on the applications it protects)

[strike]Any thoughts on Advanced SystemCare Ultimate?
I have read on PCMag that it have descent AV protection and somewhat good malware block but it fails on removing malwares
Anyone using it can give me some real experience? or how can i test it[/strike]
I had enough of it. Way too much advertising and everything i did popped up an internet explorer with IOBit site, not to mention the very slow performance on the VM after installing it
