does a tv need signal for a hdmi cable to work?

I would like to connect my laptop to my Samsung LED TV in classroom. It says it does not have any signal before I connect the cable. Does that matter? I only want the TV to work when using the HDMI cable.

Any help would be appreciated.

No need for a TV signal. Connect the laptop to the HDMI input and then change the source on the TV to HDMI.
