Kind of a dumb question but something I've never really known. Will using the Vive headset make whatever game your playing play in 3d since you are using both eyes? Or is it just a 2D screen in front of your face?

It can be both. Usually depends on what you're running. Some games work on VR and the desktop, some are VR exclusive and some aren't compatible with VR at all. There is an app called virtual desktop that brings your desktop into a 3d space. So more of 2d object in 3d space. I do advise trying to find a demo of it so you can get the experience for yourself.
