Downloading movies onto an external micro sd card

How do I download movies from my Time2touch tablet to an external micro sd card as when I try to download movies from play store from my device the option to down load to external sd card is greyed out.

It might be doing that so that you can copy it to other places. Get a program like ES Filer Manager and then you can browse to where the movie is saved and copy it to the SD card.

External SD cards may be very slow with their read write speeds... do you have a better idea?

Yes this is true, I have noticed this when trying to play movies off the SD card on my Dell Venue 8 Pro.

If its a Class 10 it should be OK. I've played 1080p video off my SD card. Its a Micro Center Class 10 and I even play it back on my older Asus Eee Pad Slider which is only a 1ghz Dual Core with 1 gig of ram and isn't that fast at all yet it play it just fine. Even when i play off a tumb drive that is in the USB port it plays just fine.
