Dropped my '97 Gateway Solo laptop

I dropped my Gateway Solo Laptop (Windows 98se) and now it will power
up but it won't show anything on the monitor - I mean it is black. I
don't mind buying a new laptop but there are files I would like to
salvage. Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas?

Thanks. By the way, we tried hooking it up to an external monitor with
no success.

head to the computer shop and buy an external case for your laptop drive
(or borrow one).... you throw your drive in there, then hook-up the case to
another computer via USB 2.0 or Firewire, and access it like a removable
hard-drive.

If you mainly use it at home, just buy a cheap external monitor.

If you are just going to replace it, borrow a friend's monitor when you need
to see to transfer files to the new machine.

Try connecting an external monitor to the VGA video output.

If the hard drive was not destroyed, there are a number of fairly easy
ways to remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to another
computer (desktop or laptop). You could use either an IDE adapter or a
USB external case.
