Hey, I've been doing quite a bit of research. And I still haven't figured out if I need a AMP or a new soundcard for the DT990s. I'm using the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming which claims to support headsets up to 300Ohm, but I have no clue about that. So anyone would could help me out?

The board has a built in headphone amp that says it can handle 300ohms. So the 990s should get plenty loud.

Will it drive the DT 990s as well as a discreet sound card or even better external amp/DACs can? Probably not. Asus is capable of doing audio quite well so it will probably be pretty good for onboard though.

Thanks for replying and I think I'll just test it out myself. Thanks for the tip tho!
Do you have a suggestion for a good external amp/DACs?

Thanks again, I'm going to look into them! Some might be harder to find in Europe.

Maybe a dumb question, the Schiit Fulla 2 has 2 inputs, is one for headphones and the other for microphone? Same for FiiO Q1. I'm currently just using a standalone mic directly into my motherboard, does microphone quality also improve with a amp/DAC?

No these don't work with mics. The 3.5mm input is for attaching a phone.

There are a few external solutions that support mics like the Sennheiser GSX 1000 and Mayflower ARC but they're well above your stated budget.

If mic support is important to you then you may want to consider trying the onboard or looking at an internal soundcard.

Is there anything specific I should look at while browsing interntal soundcards? I've seen a few so far like Sound Blaster and some Asus ones.

Honestly before I spent $100 on a sound card I'd give the onboard a chance. It has an amp which is way better than most onboard. I'm not sure anything other than a high end / flagship card would be an upgrade to what you have.
