the a8 is better for gaming, not that i'm going to be playing anything very new. but the i5 would be better for CPU intensive stuff, like the programming i'm going to be doing with it right?

but bottom line i don't know if the $150 is worth it for the i5

If you're not planning to play games much, get i5.
Trinity should be considered worth getting ONLY if you tend to play games more than working. It depends on the factor if you're a hardcore gamer or not, because i5 would be a much better option for those who almost don't play games, while Trinity performs best at games, but somewhat mediocre at work tasks (like video/image/sound editing, video playing and etc).

Upd: Oh, I've only now spotted that i5 option has AMD GPU on board.
Hmmm..in this particular case I would recommend i5, because that video card would be more powerful than just Trinity with the same card (Trinity is basically like if Bulldozer had better APU on board...and that's not very good, because Bulldozer is a very crappy...

In my personal opinion - i5 would be a better option to get.
