DVArchive newbie questions

I have just downloaded DVArchive and am trying to use it for the first time.
I have also d/l'd and installed Java V1.4.2. Something called NetBeans IDE
also installed. Is that just a JAVA compiler?

The problem occurs when I try to open DVArchive. It just opens with WINRAR
and has all the folders, but no program interface. I can't seem to find a
..exe in the archive either.

What am i doing wrong here?

Follow the instructions on setting up the directories, etc. DVA is a
java program. After you install the runtime edition of java 1.4.2, you
just double click (or have desktop shortcut to) DVArchive.jar. Clicking
on this will invoke the runtime and DVA will run. If you have a rar file
it is like a zip file and has to be uncompressed to yield the files in it.

You should just go to Dvarchive.org and download the windows install
version. It creates all the directories, etc. As long as Java is
installed, that's all you need.

that's the thing, i did download the windows installer and ran it. that's
how i installed it.

when i do a search for dvarchive.jar, it shows up in the proper directory,
but it has the icon for a WINRAR file. So I tried right clicking and
selecting 'Open With' and then looked for the JAVA program. All I could
find in the list was something called runidew which opened it up with
NetBeans, which still wasn't what I really wanted I don't think.

nothing is working here.

Did you install Java from the www.java.com site (click "Get It Now")?
The first time I installed java it was from another location and I had
problems and got the netbeans thing too. I uninstalled both and
reinstalled from the Java home page and all went well. If you use the
windows installer for DVA you should end up with a shortcut on your
desktop that points to:
"C:\Program Files\DVArchive\DVArchive.jar"
which is what you want. I also d/l'd a little program called windva.exe
that's handy for keeping DVA running in the background. See:

hey bruce:

thanks a bunch. your suggestion below worked for me and now DVArchive is
running.

I uninstalled the JAVA I had downloaded from
http/java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html which is the link on the
DVArchive download page!? and just installed it from www.java.com That's
weird that the DVA site is directing you there and it ends up not working.

Glad that solved it for you. I had d/l'd from the same link the first
time with the same result. Glad I could spare you the several hours I
spent on it! Don't know why that link is there but it sure is
troublesome.

There is no .exe in DVArchive, it's a java application (.jar) not an
executable (.exe) or command (.com) program.

The command to open it is a java command, Depending on the operating
system and the java instalation it might look something like this

"C:\Program Files\DVArchive\DVArchive.jar"

Or it might be java2 -jar dvarchive.jar
