Solved! DVD hdmi only. Old tuner. No sound

I just got a new DVD player with hdmi as the only output. Old Sony tuner. Have picture no sound. Got a hdmi splitter and hdmi to rca converter thinking that would help but still no sound. DVD to splitter. Splitter to TV. Splitter to rca converter to tuner. No go. Am I overthinking this? Can anyone help me? I’m driving myself nuts.

If the HDMI-RCA converter is a passive cable that never works. You don't need an HDMI splitter either.
You should get an HDMI audio extractor or input selector with audio extraction to provide an analog audio output from the DVD. The input selector will work with all your HDMI sources not just the DVD.
