If you rip one of your DVD's to your hard drive, what format does it save it as? MPEG? And what software does this?

Anxiously awaiting prescott....is it here yet?

Go <A HREF="http://www.doom9.org/" target="_new">here</A> and look under the guides, and start reading. You'll find out everything you need to know.

I personally use a combination of <A HREF="http://www.elby.ch/en/products/clone_dvd/" target="_new">CloneDVD</A> and <A HREF="http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html" target="_new">AnyDVD</A>, and have gotten very satisfactory results. However, some people want more control than that during the process, and there are many, many programs available with different features, such as <A HREF="http://save-now-online.com/dvd-copy-software/platinum-dvd-xcopy.htm" target="_new">DVD Xcopy XPress Platinum</A>, <A HREF="http://www.soft14.com/Multimedia_and_Productivity/Video/DVDCopy_729_Review.html" target="_new">DVDCopy</A>, <A HREF="http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp" target="_new">InterVideo DVD Copy</A>, <A HREF="http://www.brothersoft.com/Multimedia_Graphics_Video_Conversion_Super_DVD_Creator_19913.html" target="_new">Super DVD Creator</A>, <A HREF="http://www.ulead.com/dmf/runme.htm" target="_new">Ulead DVD MovieFactory</A> ... to name just a few.

No, Clone DVD rips the DVD as .VCD files, and then I burn them to a DVD+R disk with my Plextor DVD Writer using the same program. I've never bothered with the older method of trying to rip a DVD down to an .AVI or a .MPEG, and then burning it to one or more CD disks. I waited until I had a DVD writer before installing programs like this, because I wanted very high quality cloned copies, with minimal compression.

So there are apps that rip to mpeg or AVI, because I want to edit the DVD as those type of files.

Sure there are, and here is a link to a few of them:

<A HREF="http://www.softlandmark.com/DVDRipper.htm" target="_new">DVD to VCD, SVCD, DivX, MPEG or AVI Ripper Softwares</A>

The hard part is not locating the software, but finding the program, or collection of programs that suit your particular needs. Perhaps someone else here can give you an opinion on what seems to be best, based on their personal experience.
