Edifier S760D 5.1 digital input for gaming on pc

Hello guys. I am a little confused after reading everything I found on the web about the different Dolby and DTS formats and systems. I watch movies and play games on my pc and I ordered a new set of speakers to upgrade. I am planning to use digital connection, but I don't know it this is supported in my case for gaming. Probably I need a soundcard, if the live encoding is not supported. Or should I just use analog connections, then to improve quality I should buy a soundcard too. I didn't want a receiver setup, as it would be too expensive in that case. I am happy to found something like the Edifier.

My current setup
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme6
Speaker: Edifier S760D
Operating Systems: Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7
Target: Through digital input 5.1 sound in Games like CS:GO (important for true positional sound) and Movies through Netflix, Music not that often and no standard way to hear

My current speaker set are old Logitec X-540 5.1 analog input. So, I read with digital inputs the 5.1 sound can be problematic. I am not 100% sure if my onboard sound is capable of doing all the work. What need I to post in order to get help of you? I don't know. Do you think I will hear ny difference between digital input or analog?

the edifier set is $900 retail, for half that you could get into entry level receivers and speakers (depending on country of course). your choice entirely so we will just go with what you picked.

the way the edifier is described it seems to accept 5.1 over optical (compressed dolby digital sound). if your onboard does not support this (it should since its lists dts-c support), a simple sound card upgrade with dts-c like the xonar ds should work. if products do not support dolby digital over optical than they are 2.0 only which i suppose is what you read but if they do you can certainly get 5.1.

I have read a lot about that speaker and most agree it rivald receiver setups, but is cheaper in price and I didn't want to mess with a receiver. I got the S760D for 500 € in Germany.

If my onboard supports onföy converting the sound to 5.1 digital output, will this work with every application and game? Is this thing hardware based or software based with a driver. I mean, would this work with any operating system?

After 3 days of usage in gaming and music, I come to the conclusion not to use digital input. I think 5.1 through digital input is only in Windows possible, as my Linux system does not send DTS (motherboard and speaker system supports, tested in Windows). But thats ok for now, as I can't hear any quality difference between digital and analog inputs.

My problem is not solved. But I don't care anymore. I just mark this as solved, because ssddx answered and took the time. Thank you for this.
