I got my pcr-a30 finally. My mic is the same dynamic mic I've used
with my firewire 410 audio interface. But unlike the Firewire 410, the
audio that goes into the pcr-a30 is not pre-amp'ed. There's a little
knob on the back that slightly raises the input, but its not much.
Anyhow, I figured, "This won't be a problem. A little hard-limiting on
the audio in Cool Edit and it will sound fine".

But after you boost the volume with software, its got TONS of static in
it. And this is in a quiet room. Noise & hiss reduction can't
eliminate so much static without distorting the audio. Any ideas what
to do?

I'm kinda new to pre-amps. Are there tiny 'mobile' pre-amps that I
somehow attach between my mic and the pcr-a30? I have a firewire 410
interface which has a pre-amp in it, but thats too big & bulky for
mobile use. Its a heavy box... I'm trying to stick w/ only 3 things on
the road: pcr-a30, mic & laptop :) If I can somehow attach a pre-amp
to the mic that would be ideal.
Thanks

Get a preamp. The PCR-A30 does not have a mic input, it has '1/4"
phone Line input jacks (L/R) and volume'. That is not the same thing
as a mic input.

There are quite a few small preamps, but I haven't used any so I won't
give you a BS opinion. Try a new post asking about small mic preamps.
