ESPN-HD question

I'm watching the ball game (R sox-rangers) on my Voom box.
The pic quality is considerably worse than what I'm used to, in fact, I
question if it's HDTV. Since all I've ever seen is 1080i, I wonder if
ESPN-HD is actually 720P, but gets by as HD (on a technically)and it
looks bad only cause
I'm used to real HD (1080i). Comments from anyone who has
compared ESPN-HD to real Hd wanted.

It looks great here via D*. By the way, 720P is real HD also, some
argue its better than 1080i, there are plenty of threads discussing
that argument to death.

ESPN-HD only broadcasts in 720p not 1080i. I wish they would broadcast
in 1080i but 720p will do. lol Hope this helps.

Now that I have witnessed both on the same display device, I
can say that anyone suggesting that 720 scanlines looks better than 1080
needs an eye exam.

Few HDTVs can display both 720p and 1080i. Perhaps yours is doing a poor job
of upconverting the signal?

If you are looking at it on a 1080i display device, then it is throwing away
half the information contained in the 720p signal. It's simply unable to
display a 720p signal at its best.

If you compare them on the same device, your comparison is rather
meaningless. If you have a device that is natively 1080i, then a 1080i
signal will look better than a 720p signal on that device. If you have
a device that is natively 720p, then a 720p signal will look better than
a 1080i signal on that device. If the devices are well designed, the
difference will not be enormous - but not all devices are well designed.

Perhaps your set doesn't do a very good job of conversion. In any
event, both 1080i and 720p can offer a very enjoyable - and roughly
comparable - viewing experience. Each has some advantages.

I saw some 1080p displays at CES - using real 1080p source material.
Those devices definitely show an improvement over what we have now, but
it'll be a few years before those become particularly affordable.
