External Keyboard/Mouse Conflict

I have a ThinkPad 600 that I'm trying to use as a desktop. I've
connected an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard to it. The mouse is
attached to the serial port, and the keyboard is attached to the ps2
port.

The monitor works just fine, but I can't get the machine to recognize
the ps2 keyboard and serial mouse at the same time. In fact, I can't
get the machine to recognize the keyboard at all. I can get the
machine to recognize the mouse, but when I plug the laptop into the
ps2 port, the machine seems to think it's a mouse and installs a mouse
driver, which makes the serial mouse stop working.

If it matters, I just rebuilt this machine with a clean install of Win
98 SE.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, have you installed all the IBM drivers?

Second, try a y-splitter on the mouse port with a ps/2 mouse.

I think so. I reinstalled the Thinkpad Customization software from the
IBM site. Would there be anything else I'd have to reinstall?

Also go to

and click "detect my system"--an activex control will download and install
and then you may have to reboot and go back to that page. Once you've done
that and your system has been detected hit "downloads and drivers" and IBM
should tell you what you need.

The problem is that the port on the 600 series is a mouse port and not
internally wired as a true PS2 port.

You can overcome the problem by either using a PS2 splitter or a USB
keyboard.
