These "anonymous social" apps are in fact ANTIsocial as far as I can tell. Indulging people's peeping-tom fancies and to letting them say things publicly without being identified sounds like textbook antisocial behavior. It's bad enough that people have their entire life and identity online where they can massage it to appear however they want (in the face of reality), but apparently people want to go a step further and do whatever they want without the possibility of anyone being able to pin unpopular thoughts or behavior on them. No doubt anyone that posts an anonymous thought that gains lots of popularity will run around telling everyone they know that they made the post!Someone please explain to me how any of this qualifies as:a) Innovationb) TechnologyBy every current standard for what a "tech" company is, it looks like Home Depot counts as a tech company too. It has phone apps, customizable online shopping experiences and connects you with other people that can offer insight into how good a product is before you buy it! Hell, Home Depot might just be one of the hottest social media sites ever! They even have PICTURES of PRODUCTS so you can SEE what you are buying! All Home Depot needs to do is to allow for anonymous product reviews so that nobody can find out your gardening preferences. INNOVATION!

So.. where in the article does it mention anything about innovation...? All it says is FB is considering stepping out of their comfort zone, IMO.

It's more of a general commentary on the current crop of "hot" social apps. FB apparently thinks that there is something to this "anonymous social" thing, and it seems to be what many people want, for better or worse. With speculation about FB dropping another huge sum of money ($100M seems small compared to other recent activity, but it is still a LOT of money) it seems like this might be the next big "innovation" purchase. The word gets tossed around pretty loosely with just about every start-up in the bay area. Tom's is fairly good about not over-using the word, but TechCrunch seems to think that Secret is the new sliced-bread. And for the love of god Tom's, would you fix the comments to allow CR LF characters!
