[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]Put it to the people and I guarantee a constitutional amendment defining marriage is between a man and a women would pass easily...nuff said.[/citation]
Just like when the majority voted to crucify some dude claiming to be the son of god 2000 years ago?

Christians of all people should know that the popular idea is not always the right one. Jesus wasn't exactly preaching a popular message in his time, that is if you even bothered to read about who Jesus was. Maybe you are just too busy skimming through the old testament to find passages that justify your bigoted opinions.

I'm curious, would you even know what Jesus's greatest commandment of all was? Sometimes it takes an atheist to remind Christians what it is they believe...lol

It's impossible to remind them what they believe. For starters, Christianity doesn't have a clearly defined set of rules. After all, the Bible is mistranslated, misquoted and was written largely by people that hadn't witnessed the events described.

More important perhaps is that the Bible was never meant to be 'the Word of God', but is instead a set of stories with dubious meanings open to interpretation.

Christians believe whatever they choose to read in the Bible, which is more related to culture than to religion.

I'm not actually trying to change anyone's mind, I'd much rather burn in hell listening to great music around awesome people than be stuck in eternity with annoying people like that. I became an atheist for a reason lol

Ironic how a country (America) founded by atheists (or, at the very least, deists) is now the Bible-toting country and many of the countries in Europe are now very atheist.

I'm kind of tired of religious arguments (from reading the comments). Unless you follow EVERY. SINGLE. MESSAGE of the Bible, you are the architects of your own religions falsity and irrelevance. Doing otherwise automatically means that you consciously are picking and choosing which passages are literal and which are symbolic, which suggests a non-religious origin to morality. The fact that you're arguing for an anthropomorphic universe notwithstanding (a feat of arrogance that is so crushing I shudder every time I think of it), religion has always been accepted insanity. There is absolutely NO difference in me believing in religion X is the road to ultimate reality (what does that even mean?) and me believing in the fact that JRR Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings is divinely inspired. One could even argue that the story of the Lord of the Rings promotes greater morality than many religious texts.

It's already a proven fact that religious people aren't morally superior to non-religious people. As for gay marriage: homosexuals should just be happy with legal unions. Religion is, by its very construction, tribal and excluding.

I couldn't be happier: we're breeding ourselves into extinction and people are arguing against abortion. I'd rather have a planet full of gays and lesbians adopting the unwanted orphans of the world.

Okay, I'm done.

[citation][nom]jimishtar[/nom]marriage by definition is between opposite sex partners.[/citation]
No it isn't. Marriage, by definition, is a property arrangement between one man and several pieces of property (women). Both also must be of the same race.

But wait a minute... we changed that... we've evolved from those archaic days. Marriage is a word with a meaning that is inherently individualistic. To each their own. Each individual decides what marriage is to them and them alone. Nobody has a right to force their definition of marriage onto others.

As such the only logical conclusion is that anyone can call whatever union they have "marriage" as nobody owns the word and its definition. It is to be respected by an inter-subjective consensus and this inter-subjective consensus ought to be empirical, logical, reasonable and rational.

The end conclusion is that there is no same sex marriage or opposite sex marriage. There is only Marriage and it is whatever you make it to be in your own private life.

Using God as an argument is invalid because God also gave everybody CHOICE! I take a neutral stance on this as it does not affect me one way or another.

God didnt give us a choice here. It's stictly prohibited by God! It's considered a sin in God's sight! Dont twist scriptures.

[citation][nom]edeawillrule[/nom]1And at this point I think it's safe to say that it's time for people to stop depending on some possibly nonexistent god and start depending on themselves.[/citation]
You can't see God so hes nonexistent? You can't see the wind yet it is here. You have a little pamphlet about how to use windows 7 and you trust it and use it for some of the items. The Bible is a book that describes things yet you don't want to read it? If God doesn't exist why do people choose to be atheists against God? Miracles happen every day. lives that should have been lost and saved. EVEN IF God didn't exist then wouldn't it be better to live a lie about being good and not killing other people and following the ten commandments and loving others and believing in a lie that some day we will go to heaven and reap the rewards for essentially being good?

Oh snap here we go.

I think it's good that they added civil unions.
I think that's a good alternative to marriage for homosexuals for tax purposes and whatever else.

But marriage... yeah that is a church institution that for some rleason the government latched onto. I say let churches say whether someone is married. But for non-religious purposes let the government define civil unions for hetro and homo sexuals.

Rabble! Rabble!

I want to impose my own viewpoints on your life!

Rabble!

[citation][nom]kewlx[/nom]EVEN IF God didn't exist then wouldn't it be better to live a lie about being good and not killing other people and following the ten commandments and loving others and believing in a lie that some day we will go to heaven and reap the rewards for essentially being good?[/citation]
If only that was the case. Unfortunately, just 'living good' isn't enough for some people and they feel the need to impose their religious views on others. I don't buy any of the sky-fairy or magic wizard in the clouds nonsense preached to me in any of the Jewish/Christian/Islamic texts. To me, the current day religions are no different than the Greek/Roman/Egyptian pantheons of the past. Eventually (maybe a few hundred years, maybe a few thousand), the Judeo-Christian religions will be viewed the same way, as mythology believed by an ancient and primitive people who didn't have flying cars or jet-packs. It's happened to every religion before our current ones and will likely happen to many more in the future.

As far as religion being the only reason people are good... You mean to tell me if it wasn't for the threat of some supposed father-figure in the clouds you'd be on a wanton killing and destruction rampage? That scares the heck out of me. Of course, the supposedly religious people (Christians, Jews, Muslims, et. al) do spend a lot of killing each other, despite a commandment telling them not to. Not to mention the supposed "Christian" USA who happens to have a lot of people working on the Sabbath (supposedly a capital offense according to Exodus, also a violation of commandment #4).

I strongly disagree that religion is the reason we all work together towards the good of the community. Game theory has a lot of this pretty much worked out. It's in the best interest of the species to work together rather than screw each other over because such behaviour is self-destructive and can lead to the destruction of the species. Heck, just look at WoW (or any MMO really). Guilds are essentially groups of unrelated (and hugely separated) people working together for a common goal, to better themselves and their guild. People that betray the guild are punished/exiled and may end up having difficulty getting into a new guild due to stigma, thus hurting their ability to better themselves. People in WoW aren't working together as a cohesive group because of some fear of an all-powerful being, they're doing it because it makes the most sense to do so.

Of course, working together for the betterment of the group is hardly unique to humans in the animal kingdom: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2011/01/31/1016269108

If religious folks were all content to keep their beliefs to themselves (and good chunk of them are actually) I'd have no issue with religion. But this whole thing about "gay marriage being a slight against god, therefore we must stop it" just ticks me off (not to mention the whole "they believe in a different cloud wizard! Kill them!" issue). You have no right to force your religious views on someone else who happens to do something you don't like nor do you have the right to force them to live as second class citizen. Also, their doing of something you don't like in the open does not imply they're forcing you to live as they do. It's just as wrong for them to force you to be gay as it is for you to force them to be Christian. Same goes for you people who say 'it's gross, so they must be stopped.' I happen to think eating beef liver is one of the most vile and disgusting things on this planet, I hate the smell, the texture and the taste; however, that doesn't give me the right to stop people who like it from eating it next to me in a restaurant.

Anyway, back on topic. Good for Facebook, they're a private company and can do whatever the heck they want, it's a free country. If you don't like it, go back to myspace or some other website more in tune with your beliefs, it's a free country for you too.

Wind isn't something that exists, it is a word used to describe moving air. So no, wind isn't here, air is. And unlike many people I'm not stupid enough to need a pamphlet to tell me how to use Windows 7, just like I don't need some 2000 year old holy babble to tell me how to live my life. You're assuming that I've never read the bible, which just makes you seem like an ass. Being an atheist isn't being against god it's not believing in god. How can someone oppose something that they think doesn't exist? I am agnostic and have a better system of morals and values than most Christians, so the best way to live is to work towards bettering mankind and yourself, not blindly doing whatever an ancient book tells you without question.

Its amazing how this becomes a religious thing LoL its this simple back when humans were considered barbaric it was okay to have huge sex parties and to sleep with men and women at the same time it was also okay to have multiple wifes and to kill a wife if she cheated on you.. now fast forward and mankind has gotten wise and now we have one Spouse i guess i should say being wife would mean one was female and one was male lmao... and we are not allowed to kill our spouses when they cheat which i think is debatable i think we should revist this ruling... and we are better for this correct we are less barbaric... than we now want to have the freedom to marry inside the same sex... so someone said something about us being better than animals well i hate to break it too you but animals dont do this. how many animals do you see that mate for life that have a male counterpart humm i think none. so really it comes down to people wanting to keep the term the way it has been sense greek times which is a union of a woman and a man... and greeks were very bi sexual and they still kept it in that term

People lets stop bickering over the definition of what marriage is! Comments on this article that start arguments regarding God should not have a place here, it's off topic!

We should instead focus on the non-religious problems with the new classification. We live in a day and age that we should be mature enough that we do not discriminate people for their color, religion, sexual orientations and stand as a united people. However, sadly, us people and the media/TV have drawn visible lines between groups. We have huge divisions in politics, we have the B.E.T. Channel (why do we have to bring race into the picture). At least CMT isn't called W.E.T. We now have the new Facebook classification, it'd dumb. If gay and lesbian couples want the same classification as a Married couple that is composed of a Man & Woman, there is no reason to classify them in 2 new categories. It's Just hypocritical to ask for unity and ask for diversity at the same time.

God made man & woman to go about and reproduce, so that the continuity of people/humans themselves can continue for generations. Now, let me see the same sex pull that one off.
Those who wish to contest my statement, your A: either thinking of artificial insemenation or B: adoption. Both (Man-Made) ideas, and yet still need either a man or woman to make that happen. Unfortunately the real founders of the United States have nothing they can do about our impending self destruction as a nation.
This country was originally built on foundations of christianity, and it was a great system that was able to be contested only recently by modern laws, civil acts, and unfortunately, our own culture as a country that portrays its ways through TV, Music, Movies, and whatever other form of entertainment we have. The meaning of freedom some how got tossed around much lately, and has been poorly interpeted to allow just about anything in todays world.
I am not anti-american, I love this country just as much as the guy who hangs his flag in the morning and takes it down at night. But I will say I am shamed of what America is becoming, and how the World looks at us now. The States used to be viewed as a good example of what democracy and freedom should be.

[citation][nom]Tell It As It Is Guy[/nom]This country was originally built on foundations of christianity[/citation]
So what part of Christianity was Benjamin Franklin following when he was banging everything that moved at drunken sex parties he frequently visited? Where exactly in Christianity does Thomas Jefferson's Bible fit in that removes the religious garbage such as references towards angels, Jesus's divinity, etc?

Again, this world would be a much more peaceful place if Christians would read a freakin history book! Christians just want to believe their own version of history, rather than the reality of what really went on, such as this country being founded by perverts and racists.

@maestintaolius

Thank you.

I know the "don't feed the troll" guide, and that's why rarely get involved lately in these kind of discussions. Time and energies are often best spent not trying to enlighten such trolls, but I still thank you for your time and energy. I can only hope it made some little difference to some undecided soul out there, because the people replying back and forth have their ideas written on non-rewritable media seems.
