i've got a hard drive that i want to delete and format problem is when i
am
using fdisk and want to delete a partition the program asks for the
"volume label"
normally this is blank and you can just hit enter but on this hard drive
its
got a bunch of weird characters in the volume label name. Is there
a wild card i can insert when it asks for the volume label? any other
suggestions

Look for an eight bit character map grid so you can find the numeric code for
the characters you see. Then you can enter the volume label using the Alt key
and numeric keypad to enter the three digit codes.

I'm unaware of any wildcards that you can use in the DOS/Windows fdisk,
but I'd suggest doing a quick google search for something like "boot disk
partition editor" or "boot disk wipe partition tables." There are a lot
of bootdisks out there that do nothing more than destroy all data on your
disk, including partition information, and once this is done you should be
able to start over with fdisk if need be, without the garbage info in the
volume label fields (and anywhere else it might be.) Other results might
yield a parititioning utility that doesn't require you to punch in the
volume label.

Be forewarned that your disk might already be toast; the few times I've
actually seen this happen, the drive has already been on the verge of
failure (or already past that point.)

google DBAN for a straightfoward bootdisk that will do the job.
other options might be gdisk.exe from Norton Ghost, or partition magic.

Another option here is to use a program (there are several) that simply
"blow away" the entire partition table, overwriting the first track with
binary zeroes. I use "Zap", which was an IBM program availalbe on their
web site. It may or may not be available on the Hitachi web site.
There are several other programs that work similarly.

Use a mix of upper and lower case.
