IE9 still has this and on top of that the article even lists that Mozilla said they were following chrome and opera on eliminating it

Don't forget Chrome has also already dropped this.
K, now everyone can argue.
Keep it clean and fair, boys!

What blows my mind is that Firefox 4 came out in March, 5 just came out, and in the next 3 months they are already planning on releasing 6 and 7. At this rate they might as well release nightly builds and just add a new version number to each of them.

*Introducing Firefox 1406* (the crowd falls asleep)

They are trying to compete with Chrome's release cycle. The difference is chrome actually makes significant improvements.

I don't like this new release cycle. Firefox 5 feels more like Firefox 4.1. Mozilla, when something works fine theres no need to change it to "keep up" with "fashion". *cough* copying chrome *cough*.

But what crossed my mind is, actually Firefox 3.5/3.6 should of been Firefox 4, Firefox 4 should have been Firefox 5.

They've messed up their release cycle in my opinion, obviously it doesn't affect consumer usage, but it confuses the average home user.

FF is going to lose their existing users when people realize every 3 months they're going to have to update all their add-ons and most aren't going to happen right away.

It takes them 2 versions to drop the http from the bar. How long can it possibly take?

I don't think it's that. Maybe the commit is only in the Aurora channel and it's gonna take them 2 releases to get it into the main tree.

Same thing with Firefox 6 and extended privacy controls which i wanted ever since Firefox 4 but i wasn't gonna use an Aurora build.

Honestly I don't like the changes that I am seeing over at Mozilla. This new numbering scheme is pretty stupid. Why? Business users aren't going to like the idea of automatic updates on their company's computers and keeping up with these almost weekly updates is insane. Google Chrome is already at version 13 and it has only been out for a few years. Image in a few more years when they hit version 67. How can anyone keep up with these frequent updates? I honestly don't see Chrome penetrating the business machine because of this.

Now Mozilla wants to further play me-too by incorporating the dumbest idea yet by removing the "http" prefix? What good will come of this? While I don't think removing the prefix is that big of a deal I really don't see the point in removing it. Also like others before me have said what are they going to do about the "ftp" prefix? I'm glad they are keeping the "https" prefix but why remove "http" if you are going to keep "https"? What about the other prefixes? Will I have the ability to restore the showing of the "http" prefix?

Honestly, if the system ain't broke and doesn't need improving then don't fix it. Go back to sane release schedules and don't remove the "http" prefix. I am a long time Mozilla/FF user but please don't drive me toward using Opera.

My copy of IE9 still displays the full URL. Am I missing something?

[citation][nom]Rusting In Peace[/nom]Sorry to be total buzzkill, but this is not just a prefix; it's the protocol which has meaning.I'm growing so tired of people dumbing down technology and science.[/citation]
Ditto... So very much ditto....

Great, something else I need to change in config. I already have to restore the "name search" function in the location bar that Mozilla decided I didn't need.. If I want a full search results page I use the Search Bar, that's what it's for.
