Free program to rip DVD books (Textbooks) to computer for Ipad/Kindle

We can either choose DVD's or Textbooks for our textbooks in class. I BELEVE most if not all are in PDF format (Its a little funky), but i want it readible on a Kindle or the Ipad Reader. Is there anyway to do this without too much effort??
