Solution
The phone would have to be running Android "Marshmallow" for it to allow you to install apps to the SD card. You can try and upgrade the phone to "Marshmallow", if it will let you. If you can, then you can go through the process of setting that up (included below). Just make sure you start with a 'blank' card. Why? Because when the card is changed from "External" to "Internal" it will format and encode the SD card. So anything on it would be wiped, and the card would then only work in that phone.

If you can't get it to upgrade to "Marshmallow" then, short of rooting the phone, you wouldn't be able to run apps from the SD card. However, that said, you can free up a lot of space by moving all photos, videos, music, etc., over to the...

How to turn external SD card into internal storage on "Marshmallow".

1. Go to device “Settings”, then select “Storage”.
2. Select your "SD Card", then tap the “three-dot menu“ (top-right), now select “Settings” from in there.
3. Now select “Format as internal”, and then “Erase & Format”.
4. Your SD Card will now be formatted as internal storage.
5. Reboot your phone.

NOTE: If you don't reboot the phone, many things may not work correctly, so make sure you do.
