Hi,
I was looking forward to getting CryEngine for free, but now it requires a subscription. However, I saw that the SDK is free, but I do not know what that is. Is it a add-on to the CryEngine, or is it a type of game engine? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I would like to know and understand this!

The SDK is the game engine.

The subscription gives you access to source to some example games, and is probably worth it.

That's correct. The subscription edition is for those who wish to use it for a commercial purpose and need access to non-free support and assets.

If you intend to use it for non-commercial and/or educational purposes the SDK should be sufficient.
