On Gateway laptop MT6707 unable to get power through AC adapter. For a while, was able to move cord around at spot where it plugs into laptop to get power. It eventually stopped working. Replaced adapter with still no luck.

Your power jack has come loose from the motherboard. This is an easy fix if you've the tools to do it yourself. Most shops, however, will want to replace your motherboard instead of fixing the problem - which can be very expensive. Expect a $300 or so bill from a shop.

If you've a soldering iron and the will to completely disassemble your notebook, though, you can repair it yourself for $0.

I have the exact same problem I took it to a shop and they said it needed a new motherboard... i am convinced it is the jack and have started taking the panels off and have removed all the screws from the casing to get at it, but just can't get the main case off to get a proper look. I don't want to force or snap anything, does anyone have experience of getting into the gubbins that might be able to point me in the right direction?

Here is a step-by-step guide to disassembling this laptop.
Note it says nx570x, but this model is exactly the same inside.
I disassembled my mt6707 with no problem, via this guide.

Tip:
The latch to release teh keyboard ribbon lifts up and is on a hinge, rather than popping out and pushing back in like many do.

Here is the Gateway service manual as well. Less useful, but good to have.
