Then you might then rethink you attitude when replying to one of the few
that show up there. I'm not necessarily known for my tact at times, but an
answer containing only RTFM isn't going to entice return visits by the OP
or possibly lurkers.

Some anal retentives prefer to have everything compartmentalized. The same
obsessives have created several other completely pointless groups for no
good reason whatsoever.

A camera is a camera. A digital shooter can learn more from the 35mm forum
than from all the new digital forums combined.

Anything that gets these people out of rec.photo.equipment.35mm is a good
thing. If I were to guess I'd guess you cross posted this to
rec.photo.equipment.35mm to give people there the hint about where to go.
Just a guess. Thank you Alan.

For your information, there are actually four new groups:

rec.photo.digital.point+shoot
rec.photo.digital.rangefinder
rec.photo.digital.slr-systems
rec.photo.digital.zlr

If you're not familiar with the term, ZLR is Zoom Lens Reflex. This was
the best compromise to describe high-end cameras that don't have
interchangeable lenses, but otherwise look like SLRs - such as the
Panasonic FZ20, Minolta A2, Nikon 8400 & 8800 etc.

Cheers,
David

12,000 - 13,000 posts/month in rpd make like listening to chopin during an AC/DC
concert.

If you can stand a web based board like dpreview which has got to be
one of the worst web based interfaces I have encountered, more power to
you. I prefer Usenet. The new newsgroup, rec.photo.digital.slr-sytems
has been coming along nicely. Since you don't see the need for it, just
ignore the DSLR newsgroup, nobody is forcing anyone to use it. I almost
wish Alan would stop touting the new group for fear it would start
becoming like r.p.d.

Yeah, it's really terrible the way that USENET is divided up. What a
drag it is, having to separate the photographic posts from the java
language, gardening and travel ones. And as for having to go all the
way over to a sports group to discuss football - I ask you, why on
earth bother going to a sports group to discuss sport? So much more
fun just to have a single newsgroup in one's subscription list and put
all the posts in there.

A little bit of that, but mainly motivated to reduce the time I used to spend
wading through rpd. A couple years ago it was manageable, now it's just not
possible.

Nor is the intent of an NG to help people learn every general function of a
specific camera. I understand when people question something like metering, or
why files come out a certain size in a given mode, as these are sometimes
difficult to interpret even with the manual. But the question that you're
referring to was something that can only be answered by somebody delving into
the manual for that specific camera. It might was well be the person with the
camera and the manual. The manual for the camera in question is available
online from the manufacturer.

Cheers,
Alan

1/4 or more of the threads here regard DSLR specifics. So why should people
wade through 9,000 unrelated posts to get to it? That was the primary reason
that the NG was proposed. Second to that was a desire to create an NG similar
in nature to rpe35mm, but without the film issues. And there it is.

As to dpreview, which is an excellent information source, it is a poor
discussion place IMO (an opinion I hold of almost all web based discussion
boards, although they have been getting a little better of late).

Cheers,
Alan.

My more enthusiastic side sees me posting a "C'mon on over!" post here daily.

Out of respect for everyone concerned I've held it to, I believe, 3 posts to
date since late October. This latest one followed the collection of the Dec.
statistics as showing clear, healthy growth.

We may not need ever again to advertise the success of the group, but I will try
hold off longer next time.

And by the way, as others have pointed out in various ways, rpd will still be
here, will still be healthy and strong.

Cheers,
Alan

In part yes, but you know my attitude is much less restrictive than that. While
these groups (.35mm and .slr-systems) are 'equipment' oriented, we can't escape
their purpose...

Tactful response function temporarily put on hold.

To put it both bluntly and succinctly, bullshit! The charter from your own
web page is :

CHARTER: rec.photo.digital.slr-systems

This newsgroup, rec.photo.digital.slr-systems, is an open forum for the
discussion of digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera systems.

These systems consist of:

* Digital SLR (DSLR) camera bodies with mounts for detachable lenses
* Lenses for those cameras

Additional On-Topic Discussion:

* Discussion of any relevant accessories for those camera systems,
including but not limited to: external flash units, memory cards,
microdrives, lens filters/hoods, camera bags/cases, DSLR
camera/lens/accessory maintenance, tripods and monopods.
* Photography techniques, as long as the discussion remains within the
context of DSLR photography
* Image post-processing, as long as the discussion remains within the
context of DSLR photography
* Posting links to personal photo galleries or images, as long as the
discussion remains within the context of DSLR photography
* Discussion of digital backs for film SLR bodies

PERIOD!

For you to imply here is some minimal level beneath which a question posed
is off-topic for the group is nothing more than arrogant. Might I suggest
you just let it go and let the less arrogant others who at least at this
time choose to peruse the group answer those questions you deem beneath
you. Do no harm. Otherwise, you may find you can have the group all to
yourself.

Rant off.

My apologies to the rest of r.pd., but this elitist attitude has just
struck a raw nerve. As the OP can't even get the name of the said group
correct in the subject, just who the hell is he to determine what level of
query is valid w.r.t. any dslr?
