I am using Windows 10 Pro and have connected my PC via an HDMI cable to my receiver. From there it is connected to my TV. Is there any way possible with any software to play the stereo file with the subwoofer. It doesn't even have to be 3.1, it can be 2.1, but I just need that subwoofer working. I am using an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB. I have Realtek HD Audio and have configured windows to play in 5.1 channels. When I play a surround sound MKV file, the subwoofer and all channels work fine and the subwoofer is audible. How can I make a stereo file do that?

Solution
In my receiver, I have to tell it, "if source stereo, use ALL STEREO codec" and according to the manual this enables all speakers including the sub. Different receiver vendors use different names for this "all speakers" codec.
