I know this is a naive question and um a newbie but let me say it..
I just got a new tv .60" LG plasma and I was surprised that it has no audio out inputs just like the old one..it has only optical audio out..
so um thinking about having a home theater or something but I wanna know can I use to as an audio device for the tv without the dvd or bluray player ? just as speakers ?

let me rephrase this,,,if um watching a football match ..can I use the home theater as an audio device attached to the tv to get a better sound ?

Solution
Optical output is for supplying a receiver with audio if you have things like a dvd player plugged directly into your TV. Regular speakers use speaker wire that are attached into audio channel outputs on a receiver, except for the subwoofer.

By "home theater" do you mean just a bunch of speakers? Or did it come with an amplifier box or receiver? But to get the full experience out of your home theater system, you need a receiver. You can't hook the speakers up directly to the TV because they need an amplifier and most modern subwoofers need a RCA connection.

You would have to set it up like this (sorry for bad drawings).

You can't set it up like this because there isn't enough optical outputs on the TV and the speakers don't support optical audio anyways.
