Keep reading / watching major media's headline news it has all relevant information for the sheeple of the world. If the public has access to credible information for free, it will be the fall of civilization! Bad Google!

building up an archive for when they finlay open up an ebook store?
putting ads on the sides of books that have fallen into public domain?

really i cant see why this is a bad thing unless google was selling the books

Because unauthorized scanning of books is illegal. This has been established for a long, long time.
