GPS and a Jornada780

OK
I am ready to try to get a PDA GPS solution.
The issue is my Wife uses a Jornada780 as a work PC provided by her company
and it would make sense to use it for the GPS routing with the companies she
has to go to.
What way should she go, cheap and good since it is a work function that they
will not pay for.

Are you sure about the Jornada model number?

>> Cheap and good <<

Tough one... especially since the 720 is not a young tool.

First, I'm not sure how much gps software is available for the 720 and I
would be concerned that if there is gps software, when the 720 retires,
it will may not be usable on newer pda's.

My feeling would be that if a new pda is not in the immediate future, to
recommend looking at the "low end" mapping gps units from garmin or
magellean

Another option is to look at the mitac gps unit.

http://www.bargainpda.com/price/default.asp?productID=1166&brandName=Mitac&productName=Mio%20168&display=priceDetail

Getting back to "cheap" the lowest cost option is going to be a low cost
PocketPC with a serial port, Pocket Streets, and a serial gps receiver,
but in all of these solutions, the totals will probably take it out of
most people's idea of cheap.

Just had a thought that PocketStreets (MS Streets and Trips, under $40)
should have a Handheld version, that with a serial GPS receiver
(~$100-$150) and 720 serial adaper would be a start... GPS position
indicator only, no routing capability.

She uses a Gateway Laptop with MS Streets and trips but it is hard to read
especially if you are the only person in the car. I got flamed when I tried
to tell someone else PPC devices would be hard to read also.
I'll just keep what we have. The Jornada has a CF slot? Won't the CF GPS
cards work?

Again, the issues are cost, then receiver, then software.

Before you pop for a CF GPS, assure that the device has a 720 specific
device driver...

The 720 has a serial port, so a serial receiver will work as long as you
can get a 720 serial connector adapter.

A quick look didn't expose any HPC compatable software, but keep looking.

Despite the flame, there are thousands of PPC GPS users on the roads and
many of the dedicated car devices have similar sized or even smaller
screens... the key is that the displays are designed around the screen
limits.

The cost issue is mentioned from the concern that trying the make the
720 meet the need may cost as much or more than getting another unit
that's better suited... with cost in mind, shopping for a smaller used
laptop such as a Sony Picturebook that can easily be velcroed to the
dash is also a possibility.

For what it's worth - the 720's CF slot isn't a slot, at least not on the
side that allows a GPS unit to stick out.

The CF slot on the 720 is a door that opens on the bottom of the unit, and
then closes. Any CF card that sticks out, such as the radio, gps unit, etc
would not work. As previously posted - if used, with the PC Card / CF
adapter on the side, make sure that drivers exist - I'm not aware of any.

Abandon the project now.
She can get along with the laptop if needed for now.
