Gtx 960m vs r9 m290x? which one is more powerful.

i was wondering which gpu is more powerful?
I got a good deal on an alienware 17" for 800$ Canadian
with r9 290x and i7 4700MQ 16 gb ram wondering would it stand a chance against maxwell gpu's?
