Gtx 970 to gtx 1080 or vr with the 970 is fine?

Hello

I have been working in the summer and will more because i would like to buy one of the vr sets (still a student thou doing summer jobs)
I could collect around 800$ (changed my currency to $)
The oculus site says my comuter is ready to vr
Specs:
I7 6700k
Asus maximus 8 hero
Xfx pro series xxx 850w
Giga gtx 970 g1 gaming
8gb ddr4 corsair vengance lpx

What worries me is that i just saw a friend change his gtx 980 ti to a gtx 1080 (strictly for vr as he is useing 1 1080p panel) the thing is if i upgrade to that i wont have money for a vr set just a very overkill pc for an old panel

On the other hand he seem to really know what he is doing and if he is certain that the 980 ti is not good enough that the 970 is far from it

Is it even really worth to buy a vr set with a computer that i have or i would have to upgrade it anyway to function properly?

Depends on how much you like VR; if you can try it before hand for a decent bit of time that would be best. If you're determined to upgrade to something more powerful for VR, but don't want to drop the coin on a GTX 1080, then the 1070 would be a great alternative, roughly on par with a 980Ti for $450. I ordered a 1070 straight from Nvidia, it was $473 with shipping. Personally if I had to choose I'd get a 1070 and wait a while on the VR until they get more games out for it.

Lol i wasnt even looking at the 1070 (dont know why) but is it really needed? Its a great card no doubt but changeing from a 970? I think its healthy to change every 3rd generation of cards no? Buying the next card immidiately in the next generation i really dont like the idea
i would like to try vr on the other hand and maybe that gen is exactly the turn into that

I have a friend I worked with that has a GTX 970 with I believe a i7 2500? second gen i7 and he says it's smooth.

I have a 6700k with a 1070 and it is also smooth, but I haven't tried his system out to compare the two.

Try it out with what you have and if you're not happy, upgrade your card.

You'll be fine with the 970. I started on the Rift with one and it was fine. I upped to a 1080 so I could max everything out. 1070's are in and out of stock and are significantly cheaper than 1080 and might be worth getting.
For now get your oculus and use your 970. You won't have any issues. Don't look at a 970 as min spec to run it. It's min spec for an excellent experience.

Stick with the 970 and get a headset, nearly faultless VR with a 970 is better than totally smooth non existant VR with a 1080.

Here's the real deal, the 1080 is going into a system that is open for upgrading and upgrading, so with a system that already has a 1080 it's all set up to a very easy swap if something comes along better. It's that simple, because coming up here everyone has to upgrade eventually, these new setups put you into a place of being ready for years to come plus the out of the box performance is all right there now. If you don't mind working a couple extra Saturdays just think how long you'll be ready for upcoming new stuff, just as simple as opening up the case and slide one out and pop in the new, no hesitation only a money issue. The amount of money you spend in something great isn't as much as you think, plus that feeling you get when your not always second guessing what if. Personally I think the 1080 makes everything run like a Rolex watch with this stuff, I'm serious, I had the 1070 and decided to swap out for the 1080. Just an observation
