@Indian Fanboys Predicting Gloom & Doom --

My company spends a lot of time fixing or entirely rewriting work that comes out of India. The threat they pose is to artificially deflate costs and mess up market values, much like SAAS does when people think software should cost $100, and forget about the unit "per month." Indian programmers working for pennies on the dollar is a myth.

The good ones work at Microsoft in New Delhi. You *might* save 10-20%, esp. with a weaker dollar if you find one working freelance. You could find a great programmer in the US as well. He'll get your requirements better, and speak English natively @ some level of a premium.

I have nothing against Indians -- but they're just people! They're not mythical powercoders who work more efficiently. On the contrary, they're frequently inferior programmers in my experience.

I'm more worried about Russians and Chinese. They tend to be well-educated, and they churn out good work for a reasonable price. Russians have been a force in programming for awhile. I've seen a few random ones whip up compilers in a month. Now *that* is talent.

What I see from India is usually security-impaired, buggy, and a total fail. Almost all of it is poorly organized. I programmed better when I was 12.

Gloom and doom? Nah. I rather enjoy laughing at the code I see from India.

Continuation of the Above:

I just wonder why this rumor of the Indian programmers being a huge cost-saver started.

Programmer-quality is a function of universities. If your country has good Universities, you'll whip up some good programmers.

India has some good universities and some good programmers.

But the good ones don't work for free, and India is a developing country with a lot of potential, but it's not Russia, the US, or China.

[citation][nom]bill gates is your daddy[/nom]Like it all really matters anymore. In 10 years all technology jobs will be in india.I work in the technology field as a high level administrator. I have watched it happen for many years now. First the American government allowed American companies to outsource level one support over to india. Now level two support is being outsourced and you can start seeing level three support going to india. Do not think for once that I do not know what I am talking about because I am watching it happen to me at this very moment.America has no technology industry anymore. It has no manufacturing. It has no agriculture and all you hear about are how companies are laying off tens of thousands of people all the time.As "We the People" we fucked up a long time ago by turning a blind eye to all of this.[/citation]

This is not specificly a USA problem, but you're absolutely right!
In Denmark we've reduced the workforce manufacturing wind farms by 2000 people recently (and we're the leading manufacturer of those things) in order to produce them cheaper in asia. We barely have any manufacturing except for select few highend products (luxury glass/ceramic, hifi, furniture etc). All we've got for export is agriculture (milk and swine in particular) and think tanks.

I love getting my code from India. As long as you are smart enough to document what you need then they do a great job. However most people here in the US are not smart enough to get past this part. I would wonder how software companies would compete if they were forced to hire people that work half as hard with 5 times more pay. That is painful to imagine. I know I would have already been out of business. But instead I now have the ability to grow my company with the code I have gotten designed. With that code I can now get a salesforce here in the US along with marketing, Management, etc. That will create jobs here in the US. However I couldnt have the opportunity to create these jobs here if it wasnt for the good value in coding that I get from India. So in my situation what is best.....

That I would have just went out of business
or
That I hired Indian coders to build my business which operates here in the US?

Hmmmm. Yeah. Kinda makes you understand why this situation is not as easy as you all think and also a good reason why I really hope none of you have a position in a public office.

There are all sorts of consequences by cutting off the Indian industry which makes there culture thrive and ours grow. Whats wrong with that?

Fujistu recently spent, i think 13 million dollar rewritting their software and they hired Middle Eastern outsourcing people to do the job. At the end of the project, it turns out that nobody knew what they were doing and fucked the whole thing up. It costs them 10 million dollars to get it back to where it was. They hired Americans to fix it.

The work force is set to change DRASTICALLY because of the new generation compared to the old generation. The ME generation is somewhat correct in believing they should be appreciated more (to some extent, showing up to work on time doesnt deserve a medal, its your job you are SUPPOSED to show up on time). What really happens is that people in management believe they have the power and are creating all the $$ for the company, when they forget where the real power lies. IN the peons that the manager is "managing" (aka sitting on their fat ass being lazy and getting paid too much). No, I've been in the technology industry for some time and if there is one commonality its that people in I.T. work little and expect more. I've maybe met 5 people in the 10 years of doing this professionally that actually like to work. I've met hundreds and hundreds of I.T. people that take their "knowledge" (which most actually have very little of when it comes to I.T.) for granted and usually are lazy and hardly work and cry like a bunch of panzies when they dont get their way.

It's becoming a commanlity which sucks because now those jobs are getting outsourced (and i dont feel bad for the lazy i.t. people for losing their posh job). The bad part is, it's leaving a bad name for the people that actually do their job, understand their job and work hard in understanding where non-technology people are coming from and why the are frustrated. The only this is going to change is when all the jobs are gone and they figure out, their skills aren't really all that worthy (a lot of people know computers, very little understand computers).

Without consequence nothing changes. This is the consequence of being lazy, whiney, bit*hes. And in return more then likely I.T. people will still work the same until their job is oursourced and when that happens...guess what, you deserved it. 3 USD an hour to do your job is what a lot of these middle eastern outsourcing employees are making and they are perfectly okay with that. They work harder then most, but they simply don't have the knowledge base of the ones that are worth the pay.

Looks like a Mac desktop to me too.

The quitter was a full time "designer" but apparently also at least a part time drama queen.

Funny error message but I hope you didn't try to bill the time you spent working it up. And further that you didn't cry yourself to sleep for more than one night.

Your next job always pays better, assuming you're any good at what you do.
